Compare, Contrast and Create
Standards:
6-3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of structures, processes, and responses of animals that allow them to survive and reproduce. (Life Science)
Summarize how genetic information is passed from parent to offspring by using the terms genes, chromosomes, inherited traits, genotype, phenotype, dominant traits, and recessive traits.
‘Jaguar’ Catfish Species Discovered in Amazon
The Amazon Rain Forest is home to many interesting and unique animals. Many are still waiting to be discovered. During a recent expedition led by scientists, a new species of catfish was found. This newly discovered fish is extremely small and has a different length whisker-like feature than other catfish. It is also unique because of its color. This catfish is a cream-like color with a pattern of dark patches on its body. Because this is similar to the fur of a jaguar, the scientists named this species the ‘jaguar’ catfish.
Although scientists were happy to make such a great discovery, they are worried species like this are threatened. If people continue developing lands in the Amazon Rain Forest, these unique animals may be at risk of going undiscovered or even extinct.
Activity - Comparing Physical Traits
With a partner, find a minimum of three websites that list the traits of the animals shown below. Make sure to cite the sources. List up to five traits for each of the animals shown in the picture below. Then use a three-circle Venn diagram to see which traits are common to all three.
Your Task - After you've found the information requested, and the sources, create a flyer using Publisher of some similar tool to share what you've found. to help you organize your information, create a three circle Venn diagram like the one at the top of this page...and put characteristics that are different, and those that might be similar in the appropriate sections of the Venn diagram.
